I’m starting a new simple layout project that is based on a double helix kit from Precision Model Railroad. I plan to build the double helix kit and then have an extra loop of track around the outside of the base of the helix. This should be a fun project.
The outer helix will use 15" radius Kato Unitrack and the inner helix will use 12.4" Kato Unitrack. The outer loop around the base of the layout will be a mix of the 18.94" radius curves and 15" radius curves.
Initially, I will make it a mountain-theme type layout, but maybe I could have interchangeable central sections. Perhaps some city buildings, or a train station at the top and maybe one at the bottom. Or, I could have a summer mountain scene that can be swapped out with spring, fall, and winter scenes.
This should be a fun display and travel layout to take to train shows.
